Overview Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to
create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced
manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its
kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location,
the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative
solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity
for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and
environmental impact. Responsibilities: In this role, the Chemist
would be operating and maintaining chemistry scale-up equipment in
a GMP pharmaceutical research and development laboratory. Actively
involved in receiving chemistry from early phase process chemistry
and medicinal chemistry labs: evaluating the safety of the incoming
procedures in collaboration with the safety group and process
engineering, ordering and staging chemicals, authoring batch
records, obtaining reference materials and participating in setting
up analytical methods, performing scale-up reactions to supply
materials to support early phase development and to support the
team for GMP kilo-lab campaigns. Training and assisting scientists
that submit chemistry for scale-up and demonstrations.
Participation in the development of chemical reactions,
distillations, extractions, and crystallization /isolations.
Supervision of other chemists, possibly technicians. Basic
Requirements BS, MS or PhD in Chemistry 15 years’ experience
developing and scaling reactions from gram to hundreds of grams
scale. 5 years of experience with small molecule processing in a
cGMP environment. Additional Skills and Preferences Supervisory
experience, ideally of small teams Expected to maintain a safe,
clean, well-organized, and productive chemistry lab. Good working
knowledge of organic chemistry and mechanisms and application to
reaction improvement and optimization. Experience with a variety of
analytical techniques: HPLC/UPLC, MS, NMR, GC, KF, DSC, XRD, etc.
Understanding of implications of scale-up on chemical processes and
the impact on process efficiency, safety and quality. Process
quantification and tying up mass balance for products and
by-products. Experience tracking and quantifying fate and purge of
impurities throughout multi-step chemical processes. Familiarity
with physical/solid state chemistry: crystallization development
and optimization, understanding of polymorphism and particle size
control, and safe handling of solids/dry end processing.
Proficiency with the purification of chemicals via chromatography
and distillation. Maintaining a well-organized and detailed lab
notebook with accurate descriptions of the chemistry and
observations to enable the preparation of technical
packages/technical transfers and accurate replication in receiving
labs. Participate in training, mentoring, and supporting chemists
in safe and practical process chemistry techniques during
demonstrations and material preparations. Knowledge on setup of
kilo scale equipment so that processes can be operated, safely,
efficiently and with scale-up factors in mind (kinetics, mass and
heat transfer). Ability to work cross-functionally across
disciplines and levels with engineers, analytical chemists,
chemical technicians, safety and quality representatives. Other

on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic
location. The anticipated wage for this position is $121,500 -
$198,000 Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a
company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual
performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit
